Gate of Thunder is a scrolling shooter by Hudson Soft and Red Entertainment for the PC Engine CD-ROM originally released in 1992. It was also a pack-in game for the TurboDuo in North America. It was released on the Wii Virtual Console on October 15, 2007 in North America. The game is the first CD based game on the American Virtual Console. It was released on the PlayStation Network on March 17, 2010 in Japan.

Gate of Thunder features a very similar gameplay to the Thunder Force series, including the ability of stocking up weapons and change between them at the press of a button, because this game is developed by team Raimon, that consist of Thunder Force II and III's staff, including the main programmer Fukuda Izumi and the graphic designer Tsuzikawa Osamu.

Overview[]

The player controls the spaceship Hunting Dog, piloted by a space cop named Hawk. Along with ally Esty and her ship the Wild Cat(Item carrier), Hawk must stop General Don Jingi and his Obellon army from taking a powerful energy source called "Starlight" from the planet of Aries.

Gate of Thunder is considered to be one of the PC Engine's most well regarded games, with the quality of the game's Red Book CD audio music soundtrack continuing to be highly praised to this day.

TurboDuo pack-in compilation[]

As a pack-in game for the North American TurboDuo, Gate of Thunder was bundled with three other games on the same disc. Readily available in the compilation were Bonk's Adventure and Bonk's Revenge, while Bomberman became available after entering a code. While Gate of Thunder had a Red Book soundtrack and thus benefited from the CD format, the other three games were merely modified ROM dumps of the TurboChip versions.
